Paid for ChatGPT but still on Free? The fix checklist
Published 2026-10-147 min readUpdated 2026-10-14

You paid, the money left your card, and ChatGPT still greets you as a Free user. It is one of the most common messages our support inbox gets — and in most cases the plan is not lost, it is just attached to something you are not looking at. Work through these six steps in order; each one eliminates a real cause.
Step 1 — Wait out the delivery window
Not every payment activates the plan in the same instant. Automatic top-ups on this site are applied about 1 to 3 minutes after payment; orders that support handles manually usually finish within 5 to 30 minutes. During busy hours it can take a few extra minutes.
If you subscribed through OpenAI directly, activation is normally instant — but App Store and Google Play purchases can lag behind the receipt by a while.
Step 2 — Check the account, not the app
The plan is attached to the account that was charged — not to the device, and not to the app. Many people run two logins without thinking about it: a personal email and a Google sign-in, or a work workspace and a private account. If the email on your payment receipt is not the one you are signed in with, you are looking at the wrong account.
Check both sides: open Settings → Subscription in ChatGPT while signed in with each login. The one showing the paid plan is the one that was charged.
Step 3 — Find where the subscription actually lives
There are three places a ChatGPT plan can live, and each has its own support path:
- Bought on the ChatGPT website — it shows in Settings → Subscription in the browser and the app alike.
- Bought in the iPhone app (App Store) — it is tied to your Apple ID and shows under your Apple subscriptions; refunds go through Apple, not OpenAI.
- Bought in the Android app (Google Play) — tied to the Google account, listed in Play subscriptions, refunded through Google.
A plan bought through an app store can even be active on the account while the ChatGPT interface still offers you Plus — because the app store purchase was made with a different account. The refund guide covers the cancellation and refund paths for each.
Step 4 — Look up your order here
If you bought a top-up on this site, you do not have to guess. Open the order lookup page and enter the order number together with the email you used at checkout. The page shows the live payment and delivery status — including orders that are queued while a tier is out of stock.
Step 5 — Refresh the session
A stale session is the most innocent cause on this list: the plan has arrived, but your app is still showing a cached account state. Sign out of the ChatGPT app and the browser, sign back in, and check Settings → Subscription again. On mobile, update the app while you are at it — old builds have shown outdated plan badges for hours after a change.
Step 6 — Contact support with two things
If the plan is still missing after all of the above, write to support@chatgptplan.lol with the order number and the email used at checkout — those two items let support trace the delivery immediately. Failed or undelivered top-ups are refunded in full the same day, so there is no scenario where the money is simply lost.
How to avoid this next time
- Order with the email of the account you want topped up — it is the first thing support checks.
- Keep the order number until you have seen the plan active in Settings → Subscription.
- Check the email on any OpenAI receipt against your ChatGPT login before opening a claim.
- If something looks off, check status first via the order lookup — and if the payment itself failed, the payment troubleshooting guide has the fix for the usual decline reasons.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I wait after paying before worrying?
Automatic top-ups here are applied about 1 to 3 minutes after payment; orders handled by support usually finish within 5 to 30 minutes. If the plan is still missing well after that window, work through the checklist in this guide rather than paying again.
I paid OpenAI directly and ChatGPT still shows Free — why?
Nine times out of ten it is an account mix-up: the subscription is attached to the account that was charged, and you are signed into a different one — a second email, a Google login, or a work account. Check Settings, then Subscription in both the app and the browser, and compare with the email on the payment receipt.
I bought a top-up here — how do I check the order?
Open the order lookup page and enter the order number together with the email you used at checkout. The page shows payment and delivery status, and you can follow it without an account.
Will signing out and back in fix it?
Sometimes. A stale session can keep showing the old plan after a top-up lands. Sign out of the ChatGPT app and the browser, sign back in, and check Settings, then Subscription. On iPhone and Android, check that the app is up to date at the same time.
What if the plan never arrives?
Email support@chatgptplan.lol with your order number. Failed or undelivered top-ups are refunded in full the same day — you should never end up paying for a plan that never appeared.
