ChatGPT Plus vs API billing: why you can be charged twice

A charge for ChatGPT Plus one week, a second charge from OpenAI the next — it looks like double billing, and it almost never is. A ChatGPT subscription and OpenAI API usage are two separate systems that happen to share one login: separate balances, separate invoices, separate billing pages. Paying for one never covers the other. Here is how the two wallets divide the work, how to check each one, and how to read the charges that look duplicated.

Quick answer: a subscription pays for the ChatGPT app; API usage is billed separately on the developer platform. Both can charge the same card in the same week — two legitimate charges, not a duplicate.

One login, two wallets

The ChatGPT subscription (Go, Plus, Business or Pro) buys access to the ChatGPT app — the product with the chat window. The OpenAI API is the developer product behind it: software calls a model and pays per usage. They share an account email and nothing else. A Plus subscription does not come with API credit, and API spending does not upgrade the app to Plus.

Checking your subscription billing

In ChatGPT open Settings and then Subscription: the active plan, price and renewal date are listed there. If the subscription was bought inside the iPhone or Android app, it does not appear on this page at all — it lives under the store subscription list and is refunded through that store, which the refund guide explains.

Checking your API billing

Sign in on the OpenAI developer platform and open Billing. Usage, credit balance and auto-recharge settings all live there. The ChatGPT app has no view of API spend, and the API dashboard has no view of the subscription — which is why the two can feel invisible to each other until both charges land on the same statement.

Why it can look like a double charge

  • A renewal plus an API charge in the same week — the most common pairing of the two systems.
  • API auto-recharge refilling credit in chunks, each refill its own charge.
  • Two accounts — a work email and a personal email can each hold subscriptions or API credit.
  • An app store purchase plus a website purchase overlapping on the same account during an upgrade or migration.

The way to tell a real duplicate from a misread one: compare invoice descriptions. Different descriptions mean different products — subscription versus usage — and each is billed once.

If you do not use the API

API charges cannot come from an idle account by themselves — usage comes from requests made with your API keys. If unknown API usage appears, revoke keys you do not recognize and turn off auto-recharge on the Billing page; if the charges continue after that, contact OpenAI support with the invoice numbers. If the charge that looks wrong is actually a direct top-up from this store, failed top-ups are refunded in full the same day — check the order on the order lookup page or email support@chatgptplan.lol.

That is a different problem with its own checklist. The paid-but-still-free six-step guide walks from the delivery window to account mix-ups, and the payment troubleshooting guide covers declines from the card side.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ChatGPT API included in ChatGPT Plus?

No. A Go, Plus, Business or Pro subscription pays for the ChatGPT app itself. API usage is billed separately on the developer platform — same login, different wallet.

Why was I charged twice in one month?

Most often it is one subscription renewal plus one API charge (or an API auto-recharge) landing in the same week. Each appears on its own invoice with its own billing page, which is why the account can look double-billed when it is not.

How do I check my API billing?

Sign in on the OpenAI developer platform and open Billing — usage, credit balance and auto-recharge settings live there. The ChatGPT app has no view of API spend, and the API dashboard has no view of your subscription.

How do I check my subscription billing?

In ChatGPT, open Settings and then Subscription. Purchases made inside the iPhone or Android app show up under the store's own subscriptions instead, and are refunded through that store.

Do I need Plus if I only use the API?

No — the two are independent. Many developers never buy a subscription; many subscription users never touch the API. Buy the one that matches how you actually use AI, and do not pay for both by accident.

Which side does this store top up?

This store tops up the ChatGPT subscription side — Go, Plus, Business, Pro 5x and Pro 20x. It does not sell API credits.

Ready to top up ChatGPT?

Pay in USD by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay and your own account is topped up in minutes.
